چکیده

Injection of CO2 in geological formations has been proposed as an effective strategy to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases. The understanding of interactions and the design of operations at an aquifer scale require the use computationally intensive numerical simulations. These simulations require the specification of flow and transport parameters of the formation that in general are poorly known leading to uncertainty in the calculated response. Therefore it is very important to determine which of these input variables have most influence on the predictions; this is called Sensitivity Analysis (SA). In general these methodologies require multiple runs of the original model becoming computationally intensive in even simple problems. In this paper, an efficient Sensitivity Analysis using polynomial chaos expansion along with the probabilistic collocation method is used in a simple problem of the numerical simulation of injection of CO2 in geological formations

Numerical Models for Evaluating CO2 Storage in Deep, Saline Aquifers: Leaky Wells and Large-Scale Geological Features

Geological storage of CO2 is one of the most promising strategies for obtaining largescale reduction in global CO2 emissions. Deep, saline aquifers within sedimentary basins have been identified as attractive options for geologic storage with a large potential storage capacity for CO2 disposal. An important risk of geological storage is the potential for leakage along existing oil and gas wells...

An integrative approach to robust design and probabilistic risk assessment for CO2 storage in geological formations

CO2 storage in geological formations is currently being discussed intensively as a technology with a high potential for mitigating CO2 emissions. However, any large-scale application requires a thorough analysis of the potential risks. Current numerical simulation models are too expensive for probabilistic risk analysis or stochastic approaches based on a brute-force approach of repeated simula...

Multiphase flow and tromp curve simulation of dense medium cyclones using Computational Fluid Dynamics

Dense Medium Cyclone is a high capacity device that is widely used in coal preparation. It is simple in design but the swirling turbulent flow, the presence of medium and coal with different density and size fraction and the presence of the air-core make the flow pattern in DMCs complex. In this article the flow pattern simulation of DMC is performed with computational fluid dynamics and Fluent...

Efficient Parallel Simulation of CO2 Geologic Sequestration in Saline Aquifers

An efficient parallel simulator for large-scale, long-term CO2 geologic sequestration in saline aquifers has been developed. The parallel simulator is a three-dimensional, fully implicit model that solves large, sparse linear systems arising from discretization of the partial differential equations for mass and energy balance in porous and fractured media. The simulator is based on the ECO2N mo...

Scaling Behavior of Convective Mixing, with Application to Geological Storage of CO2

CO2 storage in deep saline aquifers is considered a possible option for mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions from anthropogenic sources. Understanding of the underlying mechanisms, such as convective mixing, that affect the long-term fate of the injected CO2 in deep saline aquifers, is of prime importance. We present scaling analysis of the convective mixing of CO2 in saline aquifers based on...
